Samson Paris Venus And Cupid Figure Chelsea Style Porcelain C. 1860
A finely modelled porcelain group of Venus and Cupid in the Chelsea manner, related to models also produced at Derby. Venus turns gently towards Cupid, holding a bow towards which he reaches, offering a subtle variation on established 18th-century compositions.
Derived from mid-18th century European porcelain models adopted by English factories, this composition was widely produced in Chelsea and Derby. This example reflects that tradition as reinterpreted by Samson in 19th-century Paris.
The quality of modelling and decoration reflects the refined work of Samson of Paris, renowned for its accomplished interpretations of English and Continental porcelain. Samson’s success was built on a deep understanding of original Chelsea models combined with the ability to reproduce and subtly adapt them.
The reverse of the base bears a gilt anchor mark in imitation of Chelsea.
An elegant decorative object with strong visual appeal and good collector interest.
