Porcelain Pagoda-shaped Perfume Bottle By Jacob Petit, Paris, Circa 1835–1845

Artist: Jacob Petit
A rare porcelain perfume bottle by Jacob Petit, made in Paris around 1835–1845, shaped like a seven-tieredChinese pagoda. Examples that still have their original slip-on stopper areparticularly rare today, as these fragile lids have oftengone missing or been broken. Jacob Petit remains one of the most original designers ofFrench porcelain under Louis-Philippe. His Chinese-inspired designs, with their bold architectural forms and vibrant colors, rankamong the manufactory’s most sought-after pieces. The bottle consists of twoperfectly interlocking parts. The lower part forms theperfume reservoir, while the upper part serves as the original stopper. The decorationcombines Jacob Petit’s famous signature apple-green background, richgold gilding, and hand-painted floral motifs. The reverse bears theauthentic “J.P.” mark painted in blue under a glaze, accompanied by discreetincised workshop marks.                                                   Similar pieces are held in several museumcollections, notably at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where the specimenhas lost its original stopper. Complete specimens, such as this one, aretherefore significantly rarer on the market.Dimensions: Weight 732 g; Height 25 cm; Width 11cm; Depth 8.7 cm.Condition: Slight wear to the gilding, mainly on theupper part. Slight tarnish on the green enamel on the upper partof the lid. A tiny chip on the lower edge of the lid. Fine cracks inthe lower part of the lid, visible under ultraviolet light. Themain body is in excellent condition, with remarkably well-preserved decoration. When examined under UV light, it shows no restoration, repair, chips, or cracks. Please examine the attached photographscarefully, as they are an integral part of this description.
