Victorian Aynsley Landscape Cabinet Plates By Joseph Birbeck, C.1888
An elegant set of four Victorian cabinet plates produced by Aynsley in c.1888 and painted by Joseph James Birbeck Junior. The combination of deep cobalt blue grounds, lavish gilding and finely painted landscape scenes creates a striking display piece with strong decorative presence.
The plates depict Windermere, Bassenthwaite Lake, Loch Leven and Ross Castle, forming a complete Named View series inspired by some of the most admired landscapes of Britain and Ireland. Each scene is individually painted and signed by Birbeck, one of the leading porcelain painters working in Staffordshire during the late nineteenth century.
Founded in 1775, Aynsley became one of England's most respected producers of fine bone china, supplying wealthy domestic and international clients and later becoming a supplier to the British Royal Household. The combination of landscape painting and richly gilded cobalt decoration gives the set considerable visual presence. Displayed together, the four plates create a coherent decorative group rather than a collection of individual pieces.
Both historically interesting and visually impressive, the set works equally well in a porcelain collection, library, country house interior or traditional display cabinet.
