Wooden Panel Carved With A Bear And A Lion. Europe, 18th Century.

Artist: Gaston Nicod
The panel is carved from a single piece of oak; the high-relief carving depicts a bear fleeing from a lioness (though it is likely a lion, as lions were sometimes depicted without manes in the past). The eyes, made of glass paste, are inlaid. On the sides, there are traces of letters that were once stamped with a hot iron but have been deliberately erased; however, an “A” is still visible, and it is highly likely that this also refers to Gaston Nicod, whose name is marked on the first panel that pairs with this one. It is reasonable to assume that these panels are not merely decorative whimsies. Their composition suggests that they illustrate a story, a fable, or an allegory that is now difficult to identify. Good condition, very beautiful antique patina, no restoration. 26x19x3.5 cm. Europe, 18th century or earlier.
