A hand-thrown porcelain jar decorated with cobalt-blue landscape motifs under the glaze. One of the creations from the Arita kilns dating from around 1660–80. What makes this jar particularly interesting is that it was repaired with metal, something we had never seen before. The neck and base were reinforced with metal bands, which is not unusual; what is unusual, however, are the molten lead nails that appear to have been hammered in like enormous rivets to hold the broken parts together. The repair was very sturdy, as evidenced by the wear on the metal, indicating that the jar was in use for many, many years. It is a moving object, a testament to exceptional empirical craftsmanship.
