Porcelain plaque decorated with 100 deer. China, Republic period. Large Chinese porcelain plaque decorated with "100 Deer" in famille rose enamels. The deer frolic in a mountainous landscape, along a stream, under pine trees. The designs are of very high quality; the animals are depicted in various poses, skillfully painted by the artist. Chinese characters indicate that this plaque was made in 1943, but we have not been able to identify the artist. Deer and pine trees are a common subject in Chinese art and symbolize peace, tranquility, and longevity. The exceptional size and quality of this plaque make it a superb decorative object.
