Large Vietnamese Porcelain Charger From A Shipwreck Off The Coast Of Hoi An (15th Century)
A rare large charger (39 cm) made of Vietnamese porcelain, or more precisely porcelainous stoneware, recovered from a shipwreck off the coast of Hoi An (Vietnam) and archaeologically dated to the 15th century.
The rim is scalloped; the cobalt blue decoration is underglaze, and the characteristic bottom is spirally tinted with iron-red engobe.
The narrow marli features a geometric frieze, and the cavetto a floral garland. The central decoration depicts a piebald horse amid clouds. The glaze is still very shinny.
In very good condition, except for a tiny chip on the foot rim (photo 7) and a small, barely visible firing flaw (photo 6).
Diameter: 39.5 cm, weight (very heavy!): 2,900 g.
