Pair Of Bronze Palanquin Hooks - Khmer Empire (12th-13th Century)
Pair of bronze palanquin hooks - Khmer Empire (12th-13th century)
These hooks were attached to a pole with richly decorated ends and supported by several bearers; they received the palanquin's rings, also in bronze.
They are lost-wax cast around an iron core that provides strength.
Originally gilded, they are in excellent condition and coated with a beautiful malachite-green patina; the inner iron appears as rust inside the ring of one of them.
Their end terminates in the typical lion-cobra figure.
Excavated bronzes from the Buriram region (Thai Isaan) then a dependency of the Khmer Empire centered on Angkor.
Length: 16 cm, weight: 700 and 735 g.
