Large Lidded White-and-blue Porcelain Jar From The Chinese Shipwreck At Vung Tau (kangxi Period) #3
Rare lidded vase on a ciborium-shaped foot, made of white porcelain painted with a floral design in cobalt blue underglaze. Recovered from a Chinese shipwreck off the coast of Vung Tau, Vietnam, and dated by archaeologists to 1690 (during the reign of Emperor Kangxi).
Intended for re-export to Holland via the port of Batavia—now Jakarta—this shaped piece was likely meant to hold candies or sugar (costly commodities at the time). A large glass engraved with the effigy of William III, on display at the Rijksmuseum, certainly served as a model (see the last photos).
It has been cleaned of marine deposits. It has a slightly matte finish due to its long stay in the water but is in perfect condition.
Height: 25 cm, weight: 840 g.
