Pair of Imari Vases (False Pair)

Japan, Meiji Period, Late 19th Century

Dimensions:

  • Larger vase: 21.5 x 15 cm (8.5 x 5.9 in)
  • Smaller vase: 21 x 13 cm (8.3 x 5.1 in)

An elegant false pair of Imari porcelain vases dating from the late Meiji period. Although slightly different in form and dimensions, these two vases were clearly brought together to create a harmonious decorative ensemble, reflecting the Western taste for ornamental pairs at the end of the 19th century.

The decoration, executed in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue and iron-red enamels with reserved white highlights, features a rich repertoire of floral motifs, architectural elements, and birds framed within bold cartouches. The larger vase is distinguished by its particularly deep and velvety cobalt blue, while the smaller example displays a brighter and more luminous tone, creating a subtle and appealing contrast between the two pieces.

The quality of execution remains highly attractive, with the dense and balanced decoration characteristic of Japanese export wares produced during the Meiji era.

Both vases were drilled through the base at an early date for conversion into table lamps, a common practice during the early 20th century. Despite this alteration, they retain their strong decorative appeal and today form a charming ensemble suitable for a mantelpiece, bookcase, or display cabinet.

Condition: Good overall condition. Both vases drilled through the base for a former electrical fitting.

Gallery's View

These two vases perfectly illustrate the enthusiasm for Japanese Imari porcelains among Western collectors during the late 19th century. The vibrant combination of iron-red enamels and cobalt blue, together with the profusion of floral and landscape motifs, creates an immediate decorative impact. Their slight differences in shape and coloration give the ensemble a distinctive personality, moving beyond strict symmetry while preserving the visual balance sought in a paired display.

A decorative and highly evocative pair that reflects the enduring appeal of Japanese export art from the Meiji period.
