Polychrome Enameled Tulipière by Théodore Deck
Date: Circa 1880–1890
Signature: “TH. Deck”
Condition: Very good overall; minor chip on one neck.
Gallery note:
This museum-quality tulipière features a bulbous body mounted on a circular pedestal, with six long flared necks forming flower-like spouts in polychrome enameled ceramic, decorated in an Iznik-inspired motif. The piece exemplifies Théodore Deck’s fascination with Ottoman Iznik ceramics, whose patterns he studied and masterfully reinterpreted in the second half of the 19th century.
The vase comprises six small soliflores arranged around a common base, creating an original and highly decorative composition. The design is enlivened by geometric patterns drawn from traditional Iznik motifs, rendered in the characteristic palette and technique of Deck’s work.
A leading ceramist of his time, Théodore Deck played a key role in the revival of artistic ceramics in France. His research into enamels and Eastern traditions earned him international recognition.
This particularly noteworthy piece is documented in the catalogue devoted to the Musée de Marseille collection, underscoring the importance of this type of production within Deck’s oeuvre.
