Rouen Faience Covered Vegetable Dish With Cornucopia Decoration, 18th Century
Rouen, 18th Century
Charming covered vegetable dish, sometimes referred to as a small tureen, decorated in polychrome enamels in the characteristic Rouen style of the eighteenth century with Cornucopia Decoration.
Both the body and cover are adorned with an elegant decoration of flowers, foliage and insects, painted in the characteristic palette of the Rouen workshops of the eighteenth century. The lively colours, airy composition and delicate execution give the piece a particularly attractive decorative quality.
The shaped outline of the vessel, enhanced by a fine red border running around the rim, reflects the refined Rococo taste of the Louis XV period. The cover is decorated en suite and retains its original finial.
The painter's initial is visible inside the lid, an appealing detail that highlights the handcrafted nature of these historic productions.
Dimensions:
- Height: 18 cm
- Width: 22 cm
Condition:
Minor edge chips and wear consistent with age. An old hairline crack is visible inside the body. Despite this, the piece rings clearly and remains structurally sound.
Gallery's View
Rouen faience is often associated with large presentation platters and display pieces. Covered forms such as this tureen are encountered less frequently today, especially when they retain their original lid. This example is particularly appealing for the freshness of its colours, the elegance of its decoration and its decorative presence. Whether displayed on its own or alongside other eighteenth-century French faience pieces, it immediately brings the charm and refinement associated with the finest Rouen productions.
Please note that several other 18th-century Rouen faience pieces are currently available from the gallery.
