Breton Or Norman Wedding Chest, 18th Century

Breton or Norman Wedding Chest, 18th Century

Dimensions: 31 x 16.5 x 11 cm

A charming painted wooden chest, typical of vernacular productions from the North-West of France, between Normandy and Brittany. Dating from the 18th century, it belongs to a tradition of objects that are both utilitarian and symbolic, often associated with domestic life and rites of passage.

The front and sides are decorated with a naïve floral motif, composed of stylized flowers in red and ochre tones, outlined in dark lines. This simple yet expressive decorative language is characteristic of regional folk art, where spontaneity and gesture take precedence over academic precision.

The lid, more heavily marked by time, shows significant wear, revealing a surface that has become almost abstract, shaped by handling and past cleanings. Far from diminishing the piece, this patina enhances its authenticity and contributes to its visual strength.

Smaller than most examples, this chest is particularly easy to integrate into an interior. Placed on a console, a chest of drawers, or within a decorative arrangement, it brings warmth and character to any setting.

Condition:
Good overall condition.
Noticeable wear to the lid.
Side decoration remains well preserved.
Minor signs of age and use.

Gallery view:
A deeply evocative object, where time has left a nearly painterly trace. Somewhere between a utilitarian chest and a piece of folk art, it captivates through the spontaneity of its decoration and the richness of its patina. Modest in scale, yet full of presence and history.
