Moonlit Harbour Scene

Oil on canvas, 19th century
Unsigned

Dimensions:
Canvas: 64.5 × 54 cm
With frame: 76 × 65 cm

A beautiful 19th-century oil on canvas depicting a lively moonlit harbour scene, rendered in a refined nocturnal atmosphere and animated by a subtle interplay of light.

The composition is structured around the full moon, whose light gently reflects across the calm water of the port. The painter successfully captures the atmosphere of night through subtle tonal variations of deep greens and bluish greys, creating a scene that feels both mysterious and serene.

In the foreground, several sailors working around a small boat bring movement and narrative to the composition. The moonlight softly illuminates their clothing, whose warm colours stand out against the darker surroundings.

The artist further enriches the scene through two additional sources of light, which add depth and warmth to the composition:

  • a glowing light aboard the moored ship, likely coming from the captain’s cabin;

  • small fire burning near the harbour building, whose reflection shimmers on the water.

These carefully placed points of light give the painting a lively and atmospheric quality, a feature often particularly appreciated in nocturnal maritime scenes.

The painting is presented in an antique blackened wooden frame with a gilt inner slip.

On the reverse appears the stamp of a frame supplier, showing an anchor and a caduceus flanking the initials “LF”, corresponding to Le-Franc, a 19th-century supplier of artists’ materials.

Gallery’s perspective:
We particularly love the way this painting balances light and atmosphere. The moonlight is handled with real sensitivity, while the small scattered points of warm light bring the composition to life in a very appealing way. It is a decorative and atmospheric work, full of charm, that would sit beautifully in both a classical interior and a more contemporary setting.
