Bedside Holy Water Font In Bronze. Flanders, Circa 1500

Bedside Holy Water Font in Bronze. Flanders, Circa 1500

Charming Gothic bronze bedside holy water font, a Flemish work dating from around 1500.

This small domestic holy water font displays the characteristic pentagonal form associated with models traditionally suspended near the bed. Its flattened back, pointed front, and trilobate swing handle reflect a design specifically intended for wall mounting. The basin and handle attachments were cast as a single piece, while the movable handle was added separately.

Its balanced proportions and restrained design perfectly illustrate the functional aesthetic of the late Middle Ages. The piece retains a superb old chocolate-brown patina, rich and nuanced, which elegantly highlights the architectural mouldings of its silhouette. The wear visible along the edges contributes to the charm and authenticity of this object, which has survived for more than five centuries.

Comparable examples are illustrated in the reference work by Antoon and Torkild Malfait, Seven Centuries of Holy-Water Pails & Holy-Water Fonts in Bronze, Brass and Pewter.

  • Height with handle: 18 cm (7.09 in.)

  • Depth: 6 cm (2.36 in.)
Gallery's View

This small holy water font possesses a quality found only in certain genuinely early objects: a discreet yet unmistakable presence. Its patina, patiently formed over centuries, has acquired remarkable depth, giving the bronze soft, almost velvety tones that respond beautifully to the light.

Although originally created for devotional use, the piece lends itself naturally to contemporary decorative purposes. Hung on a wall, it could hold a few dried flowers, honesty stems, or a small seasonal arrangement, thereby reclaiming its role as a wall-mounted vessel while finding a place within a modern interior. Its restrained lines and almost architectural silhouette allow it to bridge the centuries with surprising ease and timeless elegance.
