Very nice bronze mortar, complete, with its pestle, Netherlands 17th century.
The mortar is tiered in 3 registers, separated by friezes of triple raised rings:
* Patronymic and dated on its upper frieze: ANTHOINE BERNERD 1640. The patronymic of the mortar's commissioner and its typology correspond to a Dutch (or German) origin.
* The middle register features 4 rectangular relief reserves with grotesque heads surrounded by a vegetal register.
* The lower register is naked, without any decoration.
Dimensions:
13 cm diameter and 8.5 cm height for the mortar.
20.5 cm length for the pestle .
The pestle is indeed its own (which remains relatively rare) as its proportions and adaptation to the pestle's using seem to attest, and a very beautiful patina similar to both elements, light brown with silver reflections.
The mortar has a slight chip on its edge (see photos) that does not detract from its overall appearance. Traces of impacts attest to its frequent/daily and prolonged use over centuries.
