Gallery's View
Tell Chapel is among the most iconic landmarks of the Swiss landscape. Closely linked to the legend of William Tell, it held a special place in the Romantic imagination of nineteenth-century Europe.
Its isolated position on the lakeshore, overlooked by dramatic cliffs and Alpine peaks, inspired many travelling artists. Among them, William Turner devoted several drawings and watercolours to the site during his journeys through Switzerland, captivated by its changing light, atmospheric effects and the grandeur of the surrounding scenery.
This delightful painting conveys that same Romantic vision of nature, where human presence and architecture appear almost overwhelmed by the scale and power of the natural world.
