Mephisto - Dominique Van Den Bossche - Terracotta Bust
Mephisto
Dominique Van Den Bossche (1854–1906)
Belgium, late 19th century
Terracotta bust
Height: 44cm
Width: 39cm
Depth: 20 cm
A striking and highly expressive terracotta bust depicting Mephisto, the legendary demonic figure from Goethe’s Faust. Captured in a moment of theatrical intensity, the character is rendered with a lifted gaze, a sly, knowing smile, and sharply defined features — embodying both seduction and irony.
This model is well documented, with several signed examples known. The present piece, though unsigned, stands out for its exceptional presence and for the depth of its patina: a rich, warm surface that enhances every detail of the sculptural work and gives the piece a particularly vivid character.
Two small incisions at the top of the head were originally intended to hold feathers, a feature seen on other versions. Their absence may suggest either an early loss or a deliberately unfinished state, possibly pointing to a workshop or artist’s proof, which could also explain the lack of signature.
Condition: very good overall condition.
Gallery’s note:
A powerful decorative statement. This bust perfectly captures the fascination for dramatic, literary, and symbolic subjects that defined the late 19th century. Mephisto remains an enduring figure in contemporary culture, making this work both historically grounded and visually compelling.
An ideal piece to anchor a refined interior, whether classical, eclectic, or modern, with a bold and distinctive presence.
