A striking and highly expressive terracotta bust depicting Mephisto, the legendary demonic figure from Goethe’s Faust. Captured in a moment of theatrical intensity, the character is rendered with a lifted gaze, a sly, knowing smile, and sharply defined features — embodying both seduction and irony.

This model is well documented, with several signed examples known. The present piece, though unsigned, stands out for its exceptional presence and for the depth of its patina: a rich, warm surface that enhances every detail of the sculptural work and gives the piece a particularly vivid character.

Two small incisions at the top of the head were originally intended to hold feathers, a feature seen on other versions. Their absence may suggest either an early loss or a deliberately unfinished state, possibly pointing to a workshop or artist’s proof, which could also explain the lack of signature.
