Rare Delft Faience Oil Or Vinegar Bottle – Louis XV Period, 18th Century
Height: 23 cm
A rare 18th-century Delft faience oil or vinegar bottle distinguished by its exceptionally sculptural Rococo silhouette. Far removed from the more common baluster-shaped examples, this piece is conceived as a dynamic composition of flowing curves, deeply moulded reliefs and richly ornamented surfaces, fully embracing the Louis XV aesthetic.
Made in tin-glazed earthenware and decorated in cobalt blue on a white ground, it features an elegant repertoire of shell motifs, scrolling foliage, floral reserves and Rococo ornament. The bold modelling gives the piece remarkable visual presence, enhanced by the interplay between the deeply sculpted reliefs and the delicately painted decoration.
Over the centuries, the glaze has developed subtle ivory and lightly ambered tones that soften the original white without diminishing its freshness. This natural patina, together with the gentle wear to the reliefs and a few minor chips from use, contributes to the charm of the piece and bears witness to its authenticity.
Good overall condition, with age-related wear consistent with its period.
Gallery's ViewBeyond its original utilitarian purpose, this piece is above all remarkable for its sculptural quality. The boundary between functional object and decorative sculpture seems to dissolve into a lively interplay of curves, volumes and light. From every angle, the relief catches the eye differently, revealing a composition of remarkable vitality.
The softly aged ivory tones of the glaze temper the brilliance of the cobalt blue, creating a depth that only centuries of use can achieve. Rather than detracting from the object, this natural patina enhances its character and speaks to its long history.
With its bold modelling and striking sculptural presence, this oil or vinegar bottle transcends its original function to become a true decorative work, perfectly illustrating the creativity of eighteenth-century Dutch faience makers.
