Large Finely Cast And Chased Bronze Ewer, 19th Century
Large finely cast and chased bronze ewer, 19th century
Height: 52 cm
A superb 19th-century bronze ewer of impressive scale and strong decorative presence.
The piece immediately stands out for the richness of its chasing and the abundance of its ornamentation in a Renaissance style: scrolling foliage, mascarons, putti, grape clusters and vegetal motifs unfold across the entire surface with remarkable finesse. The elegantly curved handle, surmounted by a small putto, along with the boldly shaped spout, contribute to the striking and dynamic silhouette of the piece.
By the quality of its execution and the spirit of its decoration, this ewer recalls fine French bronze productions from the second half of the 19th century, in the manner of works edited by Barbedienne, although the present example is unsigned.
A particularly charming and moving detail enhances its interest: an engraved inscription on the spout reads:
“A JB Colyns, Bruxelles, 25 Juin 1883”
This dedication gives the object a strong historical and personal dimension. It was offered to J. B. Colyns, a violinist and professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, most likely in recognition of an achievement, a retirement, or an important milestone. This aspect adds a unique emotional depth beyond its decorative qualities.
Very good overall condition.
An important, elegant and expressive piece, equally appealing for its craftsmanship and its historical resonance.
Gallery’s view
A true favourite. This ewer perfectly embodies what makes 19th-century decorative arts so appealing: a bold silhouette, intricate and lively chasing, a rich patina, and above all a sense of history that makes the piece truly alive. Displayed alone on a console, mantelpiece or pedestal table, it becomes an immediate focal point.
