Auguste Cain (1821–1894) Bronze Group: Rooster, Hen And Chicks
Auguste Cain (1821–1894)
Bronze Group: Rooster, Hen and Chicks
Charming patinated bronze group depicting a lively barnyard scene: a proud rooster standing beside a hen surrounded by her chicks, gathered around a small tree stump.
The work is signed “Cain” on the base, confirming its attribution to Auguste Cain, one of the leading French animal sculptors of the 19th century. Initially trained under Antoine-Louis Barye, and later a pupil of Pierre-Jules Mêne—whose daughter he married—Cain belongs to the great tradition of French animalière sculpture.
The composition is particularly animated and reflects a keen observation of animal life. The finely rendered plumage and the variety of postures bring a strong sense of movement and naturalism to the scene. This work perfectly illustrates the synthesis between Barye’s powerful observation and Mêne’s taste for naturalistic and picturesque subjects, a hallmark of Cain’s artistic language.
The rich brown patina, deep and nuanced, enhances the relief and highlights the quality of the modelling.
A decorative and engaging bronze, characteristic of the 19th-century taste for domestic animal subjects.
