Jean-jacques Feuchère (1807–1852) Peasant With A Sickle, French School, 19th Century
Jean-Jacques Feuchère (1807–1852)
Peasant with a Sickle
French School, 19th Century
Bronze with brown patina
Old 19th century cast
Signed “Feuchère scpt” on the terrace
Height: 34.5 cm (13.6 in)
Fine bronze sculpture with brown patina depicting a peasant in motion, holding a sickle raised above his head. The work bears the signature “Feuchère scpt” on the terrace and appears to be an old 19th century cast after a model by the French Romantic sculptor Jean-Jacques Feuchère (1807–1852).
The quality of the casting is particularly noteworthy. The delicate modelling of the face remains remarkably crisp, the hands are finely detailed, and the folds of the costume retain excellent definition. The treatment of the drapery, from the broad sweeping folds of the cape to the more fitted garments of the figure, demonstrates a refined attention to detail. The underside, displaying traditional finishing marks and a hand-worked surface, further supports a 19th century dating.
The composition is remarkable for its sense of movement and balance. Resting on a single point of support, the figure appears suspended in space, creating an impression of lightness rarely achieved in bronze sculpture. The sweeping curve of the sickle reinforces the dynamism of the pose while structuring the composition.
The slightly lowered head introduces a more contemplative note, tempering the energy of the gesture with a sense of quiet concentration. The nuanced brown patina enhances the modelling and reveals warm highlights on the raised areas.
An important representative of French Romantic sculpture, Feuchère is celebrated for works combining expressive vitality, technical refinement and sensitivity to movement. This model perfectly illustrates those qualities and remains one of the sculptor’s most appealing genre subjects.
Very good overall condition. Minor wear to the patina consistent with age.
Gallery NoteThis sculpture possesses an immediately engaging presence. The pose is daring, almost acrobatic, yet the overall impression remains one of elegance and control. The movement never feels theatrical; instead, it seems to emerge naturally from the figure’s balance and posture.
The silhouette works exceptionally well in space. Viewed from the front, it presents a strong and expressive composition. From the side or three-quarter view, it reveals the complexity of its construction and the skill required to create such a convincing sense of lightness in bronze.
Beyond its importance as a 19th century work, it is also a deeply decorative sculpture, capable of animating an interior through the strength of its line and the richness of its play of light. It reflects a period when the finest sculptors were able to elevate everyday subjects into works of genuine poetry.
