Small Tripod Satsuma Earthenware Vase Decorated With The 18 Luohans, 19th Century
Small tripod vase with polychrome enamel and gold decoration, made of Satsuma earthenware. The rim is multi-lobed and outlined in gold. The decoration consists of figures with halos within cartouches on a dotted background. These are the 18 Luohans or Arhats, figures from Buddhist mythology. The background is covered with decorative motifs reminiscent of paper cutouts. On the neck, there are motifs of crosses inscribed within circles.
