"Large Porcelain Platter, Samson, Paris, Sky Blue Background, Gallant Scene, Circa 1880"
A large fine porcelain platter, attributed to the Parisian workshop of Edmé Samson, circa 1880—a rare example exhibiting features sometimes found in other high-level Parisian workshops active at the same time. Decorated in the Sèvres style, the platter features a gallant scene inspired by Watteau, framed by richly gilded floral cartouches on a matte celestial blue ground—a shade rarely associated with a satin glaze in known production. The reverse bears an apocryphal mark in underglaze blue, imitating the interlaced monogram of the letters "L" typical of the Sèvres factory. Although Samson is primarily associated with glossy glazes, some commissioned pieces, inspired by 18th-century royal models, feature softened finishes. (See: Catherine Bourgeois, “Samson: Imiter pour mieux servir l'art,” Éditions Faton, 2002). Condition and Dimensions: Length 29.5 cm, Width 23.5 cm, Height 5 cm. Weight: 713 g. Old hairline crack on the reverse, professionally restored and barely visible on the obverse side. Minor wear to the gilding. Very good overall condition.
