Shaker Cup, Saint-cloud Soft-paste Porcelain, Circa 1722–1766
- A soft-paste porcelain trembler cup, decorated in shades of blue with underglaze-glazed scalloped borders, produced by the Saint-Cloud manufactory around 1722–1766.
- This is a “trembleuse,” a model invented by the Saint-Cloud porcelain manufactory. Its design features a cup held in place on its saucer by a circular rim; the cup is effectively “inserted” into the saucer, ensuring good stability. In the early 18th century, the development of these porcelain pieces designed for beverages went hand in hand with the rise in consumption of “exotic” goods that had recently arrived in the West (tea, coffee, chocolate).
- The cup was cast in relief and adorned with a band of gadroons. Its elegant monochromatic blue decoration adorns the exterior of the cup with a frieze of lambrequin motifs at the top and a geometric border at the base.
- Attribution to the Saint-Cloud manufactory is confirmed by the presence of a signature on the bottom of the cup. This signature also allows the piece to be dated between 1722 and 1766.
- In good condition; one crack and a few firing flaws are present (see photos).
- Dimensions - Cup height: 7 cm, cup diameter: 7 cm
