Antique Japanese Satsuma Miniature Vase, Signed Chosei, Meiji Period

Artist: Satsuma

This miniature Satsuma vase represents a high point in Japanese Meiji-era ceramics, produced in Kyoto around 1890–1910. With its rich figural decoration and fine materials, it is an excellent example of compact but intricate design.

On each side, we find hand-painted figures in dynamic narrative settings — a serene woman with halo and bird on one side, and a wise man with acolytes on the other. Behind the central woman, a shadowy spirit with stark white eyes emerges from the pine forest — a visual symbol of guardianship or demonic presence, often accompanying Buddhist figures like Kannon in Japanese iconography. The execution is precise and vivid, with abundant use of gold to accentuate robes, landscapes and symbolic elements. The gold patterns on the shoulders are reminiscent of woven brocades, typical of Kyoto-style Satsuma ware.

The base is marked in gold with the characters 長生造 (Chōsei-zō) — “Made by Chōsei”, a listed name among Kyoto decorators from the late Meiji period.

Miniature vases of this quality and signature are increasingly sought after by collectors and interior designers alike. This is a portable, elegant and museum-worthy work of art.
