English Rummer Engraved With The Grand Alfred Order Of Old Friends, Circa 1820–1830

Large English lead-glass rummer from the early 19th century, likely made in northeastern England, in the Newcastle or Sunderland area, around 1820–1830. The wheel-engraved decoration is in the style of northeastern England associated with John Richardson.

The round bowl rests on a short capstan-style stem and a wide circular foot. It is engraved with the emblems of the Grand Alfred Order of Old Friends (GAOF), a British mutual aid society.

The GAOF was not a regular Masonic lodge, but a fraternal workers’ organization. In the early 19th century, its members adopted rituals, a lodge structure, and symbols derived from Freemasonry and the Royal Arch. The crossed keys engraved on this glass represent the Treasurer.

One side features a heraldic cartouche surmounted by a crown and flanked by crossed swords. It contains an interlaced monogram, likely that of the first owner. Below the cartouche are the engraved numbers 7814 and 5, which may correspond to the original member and his lodge or division.

The other side is centered by the All-Seeing Eye radiating above the Triple Tau. The initials G, O, A, and F are arranged around this emblem. The design also includes a crown and miter motif, crossed keys, Jacob’s ladder, the square and compass, an open book, and a checkered pattern. The design is framed by English roses and Scottish thistles.

A numismatic catalog from 1880 documents the Grand Alfred Improved Order of Old Friends with a membership medal. Its inscription indicates that it was founded by Brother Sansum on August 5, 1818.
