Coalport Rococo Revival Floral Dessert Dishes Attributed To Jabez Aston
A decorative pair of Coalport porcelain dessert dishes dating to c.1835–1845. The shaped square forms combine moulded handles, flower-shaped reserves and richly gilded ivory-beige borders.
The borders are enriched with gilt scrollwork, grape motifs and finely modelled ornament, while the centres are painted with individually composed bouquets. The two floral compositions differ from one another, confirming their hand-painted character.
One of the dishes retains an old collector's label attributing the decoration to Jabez Aston. We have verified this attribution through the Catalogue of the Herbert Allen Collection of English Porcelain, preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where he is recorded as a flower and fruit painter working for Coalport.
Combining documented attribution, excellent preservation and high-quality floral decoration, the pair represents an attractive example of mid-nineteenth-century Coalport porcelain.
