A refined and well-documented pair of Derby candlestick figures known as the Ranelagh Dancers (Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures 1750–1848, E17, pp. 97–98, fig. 75). Modelled as a fashionable couple in theatrical dress, produced in variants between 1759 and 1769 following the famed masquerade at Ranelagh Gardens (24 May 1759). Derby created only this single paired subject in response, and it was not repeated.
The British Museum holds only the female figure from this pair. That example lacks the flower-shaped candle sconce. By contrast, the present pair survives complete, retaining both sconces and the original mirror-image compositions—an exceptional level of preservation.
