Object description :

"C.j. Mason First Period Chinoiserie Plate, C. 1815–1820"

An expressive early Mason chinoiserie plate with a rich ochre ground and bold enamel decoration. A serpentine dragon, butterflies and stylised birds animate the surface, framed by vibrant gilding that heightens the composition. The aesthetic reflects Regency fascination with exotic imagery and strong colour contrasts, making the plate a visually compelling display piece.

The reverse features an iron-red floral border and a small pseudo-Sèvres monogram—an early 19th-century decorative device used by several English workshops to evoke continental refinement. The plate has a strong presence and works beautifully as a wall or shelf display within a curated interior.

Historical Background

In the years immediately following the 1813 ironstone patent, Mason workshops developed hybrid porcelain–stone-china bodies and embraced richly coloured chinoiserie decoration. Early Mason decorators often used pseudo-Continental marks on the reverse, reflecting a desire to align with fashionable European porcelain while maintaining a distinctly English reinterpretation of Chinese themes.
