Derby Porcelain Pair “dresden Shepherds” C.1760 – Early Duesbury Period Pastoral Figures
Derby porcelain, Duesbury Derby, English porcelain, Dresden Shepherds, 18th century figures, pastoral Rococo, Derby factory, Georgian antiques, collectible Derby, porcelain pair, shepherd and lamb, shepherdess figurine
A rare and important pair of early Derby porcelain figures depicting a shepherd with dog and shepherdess with lamb, made around 1760 by William Duesbury & Co. The figures capture the charm of mid-18th-century Rococo taste, reinterpreting Kändler’s continental designs into a softer, distinctly English style.
Each stands on a pierced rococo base with floral bocage and gilt detailing. The shepherd holds a basket of flowers beside his hound; the shepherdess gathers blossoms in her apron and holds a posy with a lamb at her feet.
Documented in Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures 1750–1848 (Faber & Faber, 1990, pp. 211–212). Comparable museum examples confirm the rarity of complete pairs.
