"Rare Wedgwood Lustre Octagonal Bowl, Z5176, James Hodgkiss, England, Circa 1917"
A rare octagonal Wedgwood Lustre porcelain bowl, pattern Z5176, designed by James Hodgkiss, head decorator and mentor to Daisy Makeig-Jones. Decorated with a deep powder blue ground, hand-painted with realistic lily-of-the-valley sprig motifs on the exterior and interior—a technical detail rarely encountered even in Wedgwood's limited editions of this period. Marked Wedgwood & England in brown under the base, pattern number Z5176 hand-painted in green. Hodgkiss's influence was instrumental in the development of Wedgwood's Lustre series in the early 20th century. His rare patterns are now sought after by collectors for their quality and significance in the history of British decorative arts. Condition: Excellent condition for the period. Two lower corners show slight color variations in the blue glaze, visible only under a magnifying glass. Otherwise, perfect condition, with crisp gilding and glazes. Reflections may appear in the images—these are not defects in the item, but visual effects of the lustre glaze. Slight distortions or shine are normal effects of its iridescent surface. Dimensions: Height 6.2 cm, Width 11.2 cm. The stand is not included in the sale. Please examine the attached photographs carefully, as they are an integral part of this description.
