Object description :

"Daisy Makeig-jones, Wedgwood, Celestial Dragon Bowl, Pinky Mauve, C.1915"
Rare Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre “Celestial Dragon” bowl, created by Daisy Makeig-Jones circa 1915, pattern Z4831. According to “Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre: The Work of Daisy Makeig-Jones” by Una des Fontaines (Sotheby Parke Bernet, London, 1975, pp. 74, 277), this pattern was to be produced only with a green lustre and specific designs. This octagonal example, instead, features an exceptionally rare mauve-pink lustre—a color variation not recorded in catalogs—with large stylized gilt medallions reminiscent of abstract flowers and designs, bordered by a lavender frieze decorated with gilt flowers. The interior is decorated with a mother-of-pearl lustre with gold and bluish undertones, centered by a gilt and enameled celestial dragon, surrounded by stylized pseudo-Oriental symbols. Such variations are attributed by the author to the creative freedom and experimental approach of Daisy Makeig-Jones and her team, who sometimes produced unique or trial pieces for exhibitions, special commissions, or out of pure artistic innovation. With no known equivalent in catalogues, museum collections, or auction archives, this bowl is almost certainly a unique creation, making it a prime acquisition for a discerning Wedgwood collector. Height: 5.2 cm Diameter: 9.2 cm Condition: Minor surface wear to the gilding on the interior and rim (visible only under a magnifying glass). On the sharp edges of the upper rim, small areas of 1-2 mm in which lighter tones predominate—which may be part of the decorator's composition or represent light wear. Excellent overall condition. Reflections may appear in images—these are not defects in the object, but visual effects of the lustre glaze. Slight distortions or shine are normal effects of its iridescent surface. The stand is not included in the sale. Please examine the attached photographs carefully, as they are an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance.
