Staffordshire Creamware Masonic Pitcher, Ca. 1800–1810

Large Masonic pitcher made of fine Staffordshire earthenware, produced around 1800–1810. Its particularly slender, baluster-shaped silhouette is complemented by a wide handle and a projecting spout. Fine green bands accent the neck and foot. The decoration is printed in light olive green using engraved copper plates.

One side features an extensive Masonic design. The two Great Pillars, traditionally associated with Jachin and Boaz, are surmounted by a terrestrial globe and a celestial globe. The left pillar bears “VIDE AUDE TACE”—“See, dare, be silent”—and the right pillar bears “SIT LUX ET LUX FUIT”—“Let there be light, and there was light.”

The All-Seeing Eye overlooks the sun, the moon, and the stars, with the compass and square framing the letter “G.” Also depicted are an open book, measuring instruments and builders’ tools, Jacob’s Ladder, a beehive, and a mosaic floor. A coffin placed at the center of the lower portion clearly introduces the theme of memento mori.

The other side features a distinct Masonic cartouche, surrounded by leafy scrollwork, along with other instruments, architectural motifs, and celestial symbols. The ribbons bear the Latin motto “DEUM TIME ET REGEM HONORA”—“Fear God and honor the king”—expressing religious and monarchical loyalty.

A third printed motif, located beneath the spout, depicts a botanical bouquet of roses. The glazed underside retains an old black collection inventory label bearing the number “310.” The pitcher comes from a major private collection assembled by an English gentleman.

Condition

Two small chips beneath the tip of the spout, a small chip on the rim of the foot, as well as wear on the light olive-green printed decoration and the green bands. UV examination revealed no restoration. Otherwise, in good vintage condition.
