This refined zoomorphic porcelain piece is an exceptional example of Oriental ceramic art, masterfully modeled in the shape of a duck or waterfowl.
The piece is distinguished by a complex volumetric structure, where the naturalistic rendering of the plumage harmoniously interacts with a pictorial decoration of extraordinary visual density. The surface is entirely covered with a rich polychrome decoration that skillfully alternates geometric motifs with lobed medallions, within which peonies and chrysanthemums bloom—iconographic elements laden with symbolic meanings linked to nobility and longevity.
The color palette adheres to the aesthetic canons of prestigious Imari ware, based on the tonal contrast between the cobalt blue underglaze, the vibrant iron red, and the abundant highlights in pure gold. The technical skill is evident in the precision of the lines defining the neck and wings, where the application of the glazes follows the animal’s anatomical contours, lending a highly realistic plastic dynamism. This piece, designed for the export market, attests to the high level achieved by Japanese manufacturers between the end of the Meiji period and the beginning of the Taisho era.
