An elegant pair of large polychrome porcelain vases, Japan, second half of the 19th century, featuring a characteristic slender, trumpet-shaped form with wide rims and wavy, undulating edges.

The surface is richly hand-painted with a refined composition of large peonies, chrysanthemums, flowering branches, and naturalistic motifs, alternating with red-bordered panels depicting figures in traditional attire.

Of particular interest is the decoration featuring colorful birds nestled among the branches and flowers. The painting creates a striking sense of continuity between the birds and the surrounding vegetation, with vivid colors and a particularly decorative rendering. Also noteworthy is the depiction of the figures, with elaborate garments adorned with characteristic circular motifs in shades of blue.

The rich color palette—featuring blue, green, turquoise, coral red, and lilac—and the distinctive decorative style are characteristic of the Kutani style prevalent in Japanese production of the period, though no specific manufacturer is identified.
