"Oldest Volkstedt Porcelain Group, Fortune Teller With Cupid, 1915"
A well-defined German hard-paste porcelain group by
Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanfabrik (Oldest Volkstedt), Rudolstadt, 1915. A
fortune teller reads the palm of a young flower-seller while Cupid kneels at
their feet with an open book. Beyond a charming genre scene, the composition is
commonly read as an allegory of Love and Destiny: Cupid “prompts” the answer,
suggesting that matters of the heart are decided as much by feeling as by
fate. The
modelling is crisp and consistent with Thuringian work of the period: compact
three-figure arrangement on a rococo scroll base with green tufts and gilt
highlights, a draped side table with a small teapot, neatly painted floral
sprigs and controlled gilding. Collectors will appreciate the freshness of
colour, intact small details and the precise factory dating to 1915, which
anchors the piece within Oldest Volkstedt’s mature pre-war output.
Marks: underglaze blue crown-over-AV factory mark of Oldest Volkstedt,
dating to 1915; impressed 34 to the underside (model number).

restoration, breaks or losses.
