Clock Gilded Bronze And Onyx Watchmaker : Bozzo 1860

A Louis XVI style clock, dating from the Napoleon III period around 1860, signed on the dial and mechanism "Bozzo Governore à Angers," a clockmaker listed in Tardy's dictionary of clockmakers in 1850. Entirely crafted in gilt bronze with white stone and onyx plaques.

A rectangular base rests on four toupie feet, a central vertical section is framed by colonnettes, and surmounted by a covered vase. The overall impression is of a precious and exquisitely crafted object. The clock boasts remarkable ornamental details, including a round onyx dial with engraved and gilt Roman numerals and finely cut hands.

The decoration features laurel wreaths cascading down on either side of the dial. Foliage, scrolls, tendrils, and rosettes are motifs highly characteristic of the Louis XVI style. Small draperies and elements tied with knots symbolize harmony and balance. The lower section features a panel adorned with an acanthus leaf motif and an openwork cartouche. The dial is supported by two elements shaped like flames or stylized pine cones, symbols of vitality and eternity. The upper section displays a covered, flame-shaped vase resting on a pedestal. The vase is encircled by small lateral columns and decorated with bronze beads. The flame at the top symbolizes knowledge, purification, and the spirit.
