The clockmaker Veibel, listed in *Tardy – Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français*, was active in Lyon during this era, allowing for precise dating of the work. It is crafted from a sumptuous combination of white marble and mercury-gilt bronze, the latter featuring remarkably fine chasing. The exceptional quality of the chasing, combined with the original, highly luminous mercury gilding, testifies to a level of craftsmanship intended for a particularly discerning early 19th-century clientele.
