Clock Portico XVIIIème Era Louis XVI 18th Century XVIIIe
Elegant and perfectly balanced, this portico clock is a quintessential
example of the Louis XVI period. Its design rests on a rectangular
white marble base, adorned with a beaded frieze and punctuated by
finely chiseled mercury-gilt bronze mounts.
The upper section is distinguished by ornamental white marble vases, positioned atop the columns and in the center of the entablature. These elements, treated as antique vases, are crowned with elaborate mounts depicting stylized foliage and flower buds. The more elaborate central vase rests on an architectural base and is topped with a lid featuring a finial in the shape of a seed or a stylized apple, evoking the motifs of abundance so characteristic of Louis XVI decorative style. The more slender side vases have tapered, banded necks, accentuating the verticality and elegance of the composition.
Two curved columns frame the dial and structure the whole with lightness, linked by delicate laurel garlands and plant motifs. The highly legible, domed white enamel dial is protected by a domed glass and features exquisitely crafted, openwork gilt-bronze hands.
This so-called chamber clock is distinguished by the absence of a striking mechanism, favoring a private and silent experience. The exposed pendulum, adorned with a radiant sunburst mask, adds a vibrant and decorative dimension to the piece. The uprights are embellished with striking Wedgwood medallions: one faces right, the other left, creating a true visual dialogue. These white reliefs on a blue background, depicting allegories of Abundance and Spring, are protected by a domed glass set in a finely chased bezel.
Original mechanism intact, unaltered, with a wire suspension.
Thanks to the quality of its materials, the precision of its decoration and its excellent state of preservation, this clock is a rare piece, emblematic of Louis XVI elegance.
