Empire Bronze Clock "the Reconciliation", Model By Claude Gallé

Artist: Claude Galle
A rare and prestigious clock in patinated and mercury-gilt bronze, depicting the famous sculpted group "The Reconciliation," an emblematic model by the bronze sculptor Claude Galle (1759–1815), one of the greatest bronze masters of the Empire period. The composition portrays an embracing antique couple, rendered with remarkable modeling and anatomical finesse. The flowing drapery, natural poses, and expressive faces lend the whole a powerful emotional charge, directly inspired by Neoclassical statuary and antique sculpture. The group is positioned before a monumental architectural structure forming the clock case, richly decorated with lyres, imperial eagles, palmettes, scrolls, and foliate friezes, surmounted by a circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals. The entire piece rests on a dark green, veined marble base, adorned with gilt attributes featuring a laurel wreath and scrolls. This clock is among Claude Galle's most celebrated creations, listed in major public collections and in specialist literature on Empire bronzes. Claude Galle was the most prestigious bronze sculptor of the Napoleonic era. Based at the Quai de la Monnaie in Paris, he was an official supplier to Napoleon I, the Imperial Court, and the great aristocratic houses of Europe. His works are distinguished by exceptional chasing, deep mercury gilding, and a perfect mastery of neoclassical sculpture. Galle's pieces are now held in numerous major institutions: the Louvre Museum, the Mobilier National, the Château de Fontainebleau, the Château de Compiègne, the Musée Marmottan, and others. This clock is of museum quality, perfectly embodying the aesthetics and technical excellence of the great Parisian productions of the Empire period. The model "The Reconciliation" is considered one of Claude Galle's iconographic masterpieces, both for the power of its sculptural composition and for its historical importance in the evolution of French art bronzes.
