Non-commissioned Officers Wearing Kepis From The 23rd French Tirailleurs Regiment, Wwii

A non-commissioned officer's kepi from the 23rd Algerian Rifle Regiment, dating from World War II. The cap is made of light sky-blue cloth—now faded to an almost beige hue—and features a visor edged with black leather. The front features an embroidered “23” above a crescent moon, the emblem of the 23rd Rifle Regiment. The chin strap, made of gold-colored cannetille braid, is heavily oxidized, as are the two small brass buttons that secure it. The red cap is adorned with “Russian-style” rank braid. The interior is lined with silk and retains its beige leather sweatband, which has shrunk slightly and come loose. The item shows significant signs of wear from service and appears to have suffered from prolonged exposure to the sun.

Note –
The 23rd Regiment of Algerian Riflemen was stationed in French North Africa (primarily in Algeria) during the interwar period; some of its units participated in the Rif War in Morocco (1925–1926) against the forces of Abd el-Krim. During World War II, in May 1940, the regiment advanced toward Belgium to confront the German invasion. It took part in the Battle of the Meuse, engaging in fierce fighting against German forces attempting to cross the river. When the French front collapsed and the ensuing retreat began, the regiment carried out operations aimed at slowing the German advance. The 23rd Algerian Rifle Regiment ceased to exist in June 1940 after being surrounded, along with its division, at Marcoing (near Cambrai); it was not reconstituted later during the conflict.
