17th–18th Century Italian Parade Shield

17th–18th-century Italian parade shield.

This magnificent example of high-quality Italian armor belonged to a nobleman or high-ranking officer and was used during processions or parades.

Relief coat of arms of the Della Scala family of Verona.

A rare find, this beautiful specimen is in excellent condition for its age and retains its original leather, adorned with traces of hand-painted floral motifs.

The shield is richly decorated. The upper and central sections feature a relief motif depicting a ladder, a demonic winged ram, and a multiple cross. The design is enhanced by an inlaid engraving bearing the inscription “NUIRNUS MCCC-IIXXX .”

Unfortunately, the lining has come loose at the bottom; the shield must therefore be handled with care. The grip is also covered, and the original forearm rest is missing. This grip is likely a later replacement.

The shield is also adorned with floral motifs and overlapping designs. The rim is decorated with iron studs, between which crosses are inserted.

Several studs are missing.
