SENIOR NAVAL OFFICER'S BICORNE, Third Republic, late 19th century.
Made of black felt, trimmed with a wide woven silk braid depicting a row of naval anchors set within a garland of oak leaves. The braided trim consists of three matt gold twists, wrapping around a large, gilded naval officer’s uniform button stamped with an anchor. The large twisted cords at the tips indicate that this is a bicorne for a senior officer. The hat lining is blue satin, marked with the hatmaker’s label “TudalToulon.” In good overall condition, with signs of use. Size 55 cm.
