Non-commissioned officer's shako of the Republican Guard, Model 1928-1933, Fourth Republic.
Shaped like a truncated oblique cone, the frame is made of heavy cardboard covered in fine dark blue cloth, the crown and girdle are made of blackened varnished cowhide, and the cockade is stamped with spokes in tinplate painted in the national colors of blue, white, and red. The false chin strap is formed from a flat chain composed of circular brass rings, interlaced in pairs, held in place by two round brass rosettes stamped with a flaming bomb. Around the top of the shako is a fine gold braid in a half-diagonal pattern, with a band of orange wool woven directly into the braid in the center. On each side is a V-shaped chevron in gold braid and dark orange wool, and a black lacquered metal vent. The brass plate is stamped in relief with the arms of the city of Paris. Black patent leather visor lined with green morocco leather, with a folded brass band straddling the outer edge. Blackened and glazed sheepskin lining with six wolf's teeth. Tricolore plume with a gold olive. France, Fourth Republic. Good condition with signs of wear. Size 56 cm.
