British Heavy Cavalry Saber, Model 1796
British heavy cavalry saber, Model 1796. It features a solid circular plate guard, a single guard branch, and a leather-wrapped wooden hilt. The blade, in very good condition with only slight staining, is single-edged, features a single fuller, and has a beveled point (known as an “axe point”); it measures approximately 89 cm in length. The back of the blade bears the manufacturer’s clearly visible mark: “Osborn & Gunby.” The sword comes with its original steel scabbard, fitted with two sturdy suspension rings. While the exterior of the saber shows signs of pitting, the blade remains in excellent condition. It is quite rare to find an unmodified example, as the guard and blade of most of these sabers were modified during their service.
