Ersatz Steel-spiked Helmet From Imperial Germany During World War I
Ersatz steel spiked helmet (Pickelhaube) from the Imperial German Army, dating from World War I. An interesting specimen, recovered from the battlefield, showing traces of shell and bullet impacts. The steel shell retains about 70% of its original feldgrau green paint, with the outline of the Prussian eagle visible on the front. The brass spike is now detached from its mount. The interior still has the strap used to secure the cap, but the rest is missing. There are several holes caused by rust and shell and bullet impacts. Fragile, but a beautiful artifact bearing witness to a conflict, likely brought back as a souvenir by a soldier.
