American Officer's Top Hat, 1840s
Cylindrical (“stovepipe”) shako worn by American officers as part of their dress uniform. Heavily inspired by the British “Albert” model shako, it features a cylindrical structure covered in beaver fur, with black leather visors at the front and back. The interior is lined with paper covered in brown silk and retains its 3-inch-wide (approximately 7.6 cm) black “Rexene” (imitation leather) sweatband. On the back, the manufacturer’s mark reads: “BELZER 292 GRAND ST NEW YORK,” along with a small central mirror allowing the officer to discreetly check his appearance in public. A beautifully crafted piece, representative of the headgear privately purchased by American officers during this period. Circa the 1840s.
