Here’s the perfect piece to address a question I’m often asked: What about recent or current productions?
It must be admitted that this craft, once so refined and precious, has lost its way amid the pressures of productivity. We can’t blame anyone, though—in fact, it has adapted. The weavers, who were once nomads, created pieces to meet a specific need or purpose. Kilims adorned and insulated nomadic dwellings—on the floor, on the walls, or as removable partitions to separate spaces. Similarly, they produced various everyday objects such as carrying bags and other items.
Today, the near-universal use of chemical dyes, a more or less coarse weave, and simplified patterns have made it possible to reduce production time tenfold. Certain economic realities have taken hold. The concept of cultural heritage has evaporated, giving way to a market of imitations. 
But this does not account for the perseverance of certain production regions, and we should applaud them! True stalwarts, these weavers continue to give us hope that we might one day “hold a beautiful piece crafted according to the rules of the art.”
