A stunning Cicim from Konya, in Central Anatolia.

Cicims, pronounced “djidjim,” are woven pieces that are entirely embroidered. Most antique pieces, like this one, were used to cover the walls of nomadic tents.

The hallmark of its age: the piece is composed of two panels joined and sewn together.
It is easy to see that there is no symmetry in this piece: the width and length differ, as do the color choices in each panel. It is precisely this that reveals that, in nomadic craftsmanship, perfection was not a criterion;
beauty lies in this freedom to be different and imperfect, to not be rigid or limited by a precise pattern.
